Chrissi Island Crete, Greece. A day out in the paradise of Chrysi.

Anna takes a road trip to Chrissi Island, Crete, Greece. The little idyllic paradise just off the southern coast of Crete is a beautiful boat ride from the southern town of Ierapetra. Chrissi is famous for it's laid back environment and stunning beaches including Golden Beach. Also known as Chrysi island the cedar trees and white sandy beaches is also synonymous with donkeys as the Ierapetra townsfolk used to bring the older donkeys to the island once their working life was over to live in this stunning environment. 15kms off of the southern coast Chrissi is bathed in the deep blue Lybian Sea and is protected by the Natura 2000 Networking Programme making collection of stones or shells prohibited. You can reach Chrysi by boat from Ierapetra or Makrigialos ports and it's always best to book your boat in advance as they get busy in high season. The island has remained largely uninhabited through the centuries although archaeological excavation have discovered an ancient settlement thought to be fishermen dating back to Minoan times. The Agios Nikolaos Church is the only human built structure of note and is thought to date back to the 13th Century. Pirates and merchants used the island as a base in times gone by and around the coast there are sunken shipwrecks that bare testament to the islands use as a stopover or base. Chrissi island is home to the largest naturally formed Lebanon cedar forest in Europe and the island is almost 3/4 covered with the aromatic trees. The island of Chrissi is dotted with numerous bays with inviting, shallow turquoise waters — ideal for swimming, diving and water sports. All the boats come to the southern side of the island, a small pier known as the Vougiou Mati (Eye). Here visitors will find a local tavern to enjoy a traditional lunch. To get to the nearest beach you must follow a road that passes the cedar forest. The most famed beach on the island Belegrina or Chrissi Ammos (Golden Sand) is a short 5 minute walk from the harbor. Made out of thousands of small shells which make the spectacular pink and white sand that the Chrissi island is famous for. The beach is organized with umbrellas and a snack bar selling refreshments. We hope you enjoy Anna's day out in Chrissi. Matala, Crete, Greece. Vlog from the former Hippie Colony south of Heraklion.

Matala, Crete, Greece. Vlog from the former Hippie Colony south of Heraklion.

Situated on the Southern coast of Crete, Greece Matala is a seaside village with a natural cove and beach. The village is best known for it's recent history as a hippie colony with the caves in the cliffs becoming the home of Joni Mitchell the Canadian singer amongst others who wrote songs dedicated to the time. When Zeus seduced Princess Europa in the form of a white bull it was the beach of Matala he brought her to changing to an Eagle and taking her onto Gortyn closeby. 75km Southwest of Heraklion the village still retains some of it recent hippie heritage with painted pavements, carved trees and a bohemian feel with some more artistic shops, cafes and eateries than you might find elsewhere on the island. You can visit the caves for a small fee and some of the man made excavations into the cliff date back to pre Roman and Roman times when some were used a tombs. Our understanding of the importance of the ancient city of Gortyn located a few km's north of Matala is growing and it is understood that Matala was the port for this city right through the existence of the city and into Roman times. The natural valley that Matala lies within makes for a stunning setting and the frequent Westerly winds can mean waves are quite lively as they crash against the shell and fine stone beach. Matala still holds festivals including a large gathering in June each year when the beach is turned into an auditorium for the stage at the Westerly end the cliffs creating a stunning backdrop for the bands that play as people camp in the valley closeby. Matala is fantastic for a day out and not too far to drive from the large resorts that popular the cost to the East of Heraklion such as Gouves, Stalis, Malia or Hersonissos. Take a drive down and enjoy the 'hippie' style of Matala as Anna did for our latest vlog from Crete. Matala is somewhere relaxed and full of history that you won't forget, and on the way there or back a stopover at the Minoan Palace of Phaistos is recommended. Our tip is to visit this stunning palace as dusk on the way back from Matala. The view as the sun sets is something truly breathtaking. Arolithos Traditional Cretan Village, Heraklion, Crete, Greece. A video tour

Arolithos Traditional Cretan Village lies just 11kms south of Heraklion on the island of Crete perched on a hill. The private village has brightly coloured doors and houses that nestle on the winding streets and lead up to a beautiful courtyard shaded by trees that becomes the setting for the taverna's 'Cretan Nights' with stunning views toward Heraklion and the sea. Arolithos Museum of Rural History lies within the village and affords visitors the opportunity to dip into the cultural past of the Cretan countryside with some practical demonstrations to get involved with as you wnd your way around the pretty and atmospheric lanes. Arolithos is also a hotel and lodging and some of the pretty houses are actually hotel rooms with balconies with beautiful views and if you wander to the end of the village you will find a stunning swimming pools that guests can use whilst gazing down on the picturesque Cretan countryside. Arolithos is a great place to get away from it all out in the Cretan countryside whether you are staying within the village, visiting for one of the famous Cretan nights or if you've taken a drive up from the coast to check it out. Maybe you'll book a weaving class or just top on t he terrace and enjoy the beautiful view with a cool drink under the shady trees but whatever you do take time to check out Arolithos if only for a little while.
